The event was hosted and produced by the San Diego Business Journal and hosted at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park and sponsored by ESET, AIS, Robert Half Technology, and SDA Security.
Winners were selected by an independent committee of judges consisting of Gerald Ellison of ESET North America, Mark Kohlheim of CACI International Inc., and Chuck Phillips of Digitaria.
IT Executive of the Year Awards Honor Industry Leaders
Douglas Burke, Terry Orletsky and David MacKinnon were among eight San Diego Information Technology executives who were given special honor Thursday night at The 6th Annual San Diego Business Journal Information Technology Executive of the Year Awards.
The event was held at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, and featured a special networking reception for area IT leaders and an awards program.
Burke, the Director of Network, Infrastructure, Systems and Services, University of San Diego, and his team have made USD one of the most “virtualized” institutions of higher education in the country. Orletsky, Vice President of Information Technology, The Ken Blanchard Companies, has led his organization through infrastructure upgrades and introduced both cloud support and mobile applications this year. MacKinnon, Director of Technology/Operations, NBCUniversal (NBC 7 – KNSD), developed a multilayer contingency plan and also rolled out a new news editing platform and a new high-definition router.
“Today’s IT executive must possess many talents to manage infrastructures, ever changing software systems and rapidly expanding hardware needs,” said Randy C. Frisch, president and publisher of the Business Journal. “Without forward-thinking IT executives, ‘doing more with less’ would be impossible.” Forty-three finalists and eight winners from every sector of the high-tech world were honored. By category, the winners were:
Education: Douglas Burke, Director of Network, Infrastructure, Systems and Services, University of San Diego;
Small Nonprofit Organization: Isabel Sauerbrey, Vice President of Information Technology, San Diego Tourism Authority;
Medium Nonprofit Organization: Valarie Williams, Vice President of Information Technology/CIO, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest;

A panel of IT industry professionals including Gerald Ellison, of ESET North America, Mark Kohlheim, of CACI International Inc., and Chuck Phillips, of Digitaria, selected the winners. Sponsors of the recognition program included title sponsor, ESET, and gold sponsors, AIS, Robert Half Technology, and SDA Security.
